Men's Basketball Upends UW-Milwaukee In Overtime, 94-86

Feb. 15, 2006

Box Score

Milwaukee, Wis.- Freshman Josh Mayo scored 21 points, including eight in overtime, to pace a valiant effort by the UIC men's basketball team in a 94-86 victory over league-leading UW-Milwaukee at US Cellular Arena on Wednesday night.

The victory ended the nation's second-longest home winning streak, halting the Panthers' (18-7, 11-4) 19-game mark.

Mayo led six Flames (13-13, 6-8) players in double-digit scoring on the night. Sophomore Othyus Jeffers posted a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, followed by 17 points from senior Justin Bowen.

Danijel Zoric scored 16, while Jovan Stefanov (11 points) and Kevin Bond (10 points) rounded out the balanced UIC offensive attack.

In the closing seconds of a tight contest that featured 14 lead changes and 14 ties, the Flames held a three-point lead with six seconds remaining in regulation. A foul call on Jeffers sent Boo Davis to the line, where he converted his first free throw but purposely missed the second for a chance to tie the game. A foul on Bowen with :00.3 left on the clock sent Allan Hanson to the line, where he posted the tying points from the charity stripe to send the game to an extra session.

Forced to play the rest of the game with Jeffers and Bowen on the bench after the two forwards fouled out, UIC looked elsewhere for overtime offense and got it from Mayo, Bond and Stefanov.

With UWM nursing a one-point lead halfway through overtime, Bond netted four straight points to give UIC the lead, and Mayo swished a dagger of a trey at the :45 mark.

Stefanov then iced the win with three free throws.

UIC shot 57.4% (31-for-54) from the field, including 50% from behind the arc, and held the Panthers to 40.6% (28-for-69) on their home court.

Davis led UW-Milwaukee with a game-high 31 points.

Jeffers' double-double was his sixth of the season and marked the tenth time this year that he grabbed 10 or more rebounds.

UIC returns to action this Saturday against Murray State in Murray, Ky., as part of the eBay BracketBusters.
