Cheerleaders And Dancing Flames To Compete At Nationals

April 5, 2006

Chicago, Ill. - This week, the UIC cheerleading and dance teams travel to Daytona Beach, Fla., for their respective national championship competition.

Expectations are high, as both squads feel well-prepared.

"The philosophy and foundation of the cheer program is to have fun," said Head Cheer Coach Randy Santiago, "But we train year-round so that our student-athletes are prepared to give 100 percent when they step onto the performance floor. Past efforts have placed us in the top five. This year, we can produce a top three finish or even a national championship."

The UIC cheerleading squad will take part in the NCA College National competition.

Equally as determined to produce in the national spotlight is UIC's dance squad, the Dancing Flames. The team will compete in the National Dance Alliance competition for the first time since 2000, where the group finished fifth.

"We have worked tirelessly to prepare for this event," said Toya McGill, the squad's coach. "The girls have overcome numerous injuries and hope to give their best performance ever! Ten of the 20 teams competing advance to the finals and we hope to be in that top half."
