Chicago, Ill. - The University of Illinois at Chicago volleyball team (2-2) fell to Northwestern (1-0) in three games Tuesday night. UIC is set to take on South Florida in the opening match of the USF Best Western Invitational on Friday, Sept. 1 at 9:00 a.m. in Tampa, Florida. The following day, the Flames challenge Towson and UTEP for the conclusion of the two-day event.
The Flames were led by Katarina Nedeljkovic with ten kills, while Julie Popp paced UIC with 14 digs. Northwestern's Lindsay Anderson guided the Wildcats with 13 kills and Kate Nobilio added 15 digs on the night.
Posting a .263 attack percentage, Northwestern grabbed game one (30-22) with 16 kills and 15 digs. UIC continued to struggle on offense, allowing the Wildcats to ignite a 13-2 run early in the game two, eventually taking NU to a 2-0 advantage with a 30-21 win.
The Flames refused to go quietly, holding the Wildcats to a .154 attack percentage in game three. The two teams exchanged points early until the Flames sparked on offense and took a 26-19 lead.
Strong in the first two games, the Wildcats battled back late to clinch the sweep, 34-32.
The Flames travel to Tampa, Florida for the USF Best Western Invitational, Sept 1-2. UIC faces South Florida on Friday, Sept. 1 to kick off the three-match event, followed by two matches on Saturday, Sept 2 against Towson and the University of Texas at El Paso.
