Chicago, Ill. -The UIC men's basketball team was unable to overcome a three-point barrage from host UW-Milwaukee in the first half on Wednesday night as the Panthers defeated the Flames, 76-65, at US Cellular Arena.
UW-Milwaukee (6-14, 3-4) went 12-for-19 from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes to take a 23-point lead into intermission.
The score was knotted at 21-21 when the Panthers knocked down five straight triples in a two-minute stretch which sparked a 27-4 run to end the period. Ricky Franklin was 4-for-4 and Allen Hanson was 3-for-4 from behind the arc in the first half.
The Flames (9-10, 4-2) would not back down in the second stanza, hitting five three-pointers of their own late in the game to cut the Panthers' lead to eight, 72-64. Time was not on UIC's side, though, as a pair of free throws by Hanson and a bucket by Kaylan Anderson helped UW-Milwaukee make one final stand.
The loss spoiled junior Othyus Jeffers' seventh double-double of the year, as he finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Junior T.J. Gray scored 13 points while sophomore Josh Mayo added 10.
Avery Smith scored 19 points to lead four Panthers in double figures. Paige Paulsen tabbed 18 points and eight rebounds.
UW-Milwaukee, which hit 12 three-pointers in the first half, went 0-for-7 from behind the arc in the second stanza.
The Flames will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 20, when they host Detroit at the UIC Pavilion at 1 p.m.
