Chicago, Ill. - The UIC women's basketball team continued its winning streak to four games after defeating Detroit, 77-73, on Thursday night at the Pavilion. Notching 25 points, senior LaShonda Grant paced the Flames on offense, shooting 53.3 percent from the field (8-for-15).
Grant and senior Jacquay Holmes each pulled down a team-best seven boards against the Titans. Senior Krystal Hugelier notched 15 points, hitting 3-of-5 from three-point land and Holmes added nine points in the win.
Detroit's Kandace Evans paced the team with 28 points and seven rebounds. Evans shot 66.6 percent from the field (8-for-12) and was 6-of-8 from beyond the arc.
UIC dominated in the first five minutes of play, hitting all six from the field, including two treys for a 14-0 start. With 11:33 on the clock, Detroit sparked a 6-0 run to get within eight points (22-14).
The Titans would trail by eight points three more times before freshman Briana Hinkle drained a short jumper in the final second of the first half, 36-26.
The Flames grabbed their largest lead of 15 points at the 15:18 mark in the second half. UDM cut the deficit to four points (53-49) with under ten minutes remaining in regulation, but UIC answered with eight straight points.
The Titans threatened in the final minutes of the contest to only trail by two points, but the Flames held on for its fourth consecutive conference victory, 77-73.
UIC outrebounded Detroit 41-32 and scored 27 points off Titan turnovers. The Flames shot 50 percent from the field and were 9-for-16 (.563) from beyond the arc.
The Flames head to Ohio to battle Youngstown State on Thursday, Feb. 1 at 6:00 p.m. CST.
