Chicago, Ill. - The UIC men's basketball team will head off to paradise with an unblemished record as the Flames moved to 2-0 on the season on Tuesday night with an 81-55 victory over the University of Illinois at Springfield at the Pavilion.
UIC plays next on Friday afternoon when they take on Winthrop in the opening round of the 2007 Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Junior Scott VanderMeer led the way for the Flames on Tuesday with a career-high 19 points, while also recording five rebounds and five blocked shots. Sophomore Jeremy Buttell collected his first career double-double with 13 points and a team-best 10 rebounds.
Junior Josh Mayo tabbed 13 points and a career-high tying eight assists. Senior Karl White Jr. also reached double figures with 14 points, while adding six assists.
UIC came out of the gates strong, going 8-for-9 from the field in the opening six minutes to build a 19-8 advantage.
The Flames would go on to shoot 61 percent (19-for-31) from the field in the opening period to take a 47-28 advantage into intermission. VanderMeer and White Jr. each scored 12 points to lead UIC while Mayo chipped in 10 in the first 20 minutes of play.
UIC would build its lead to as many as 31 in the second half.
For the game, UIC shot 53 percent from the field and 54 percent from three-point range, converting 13 triple attempts on the night.
The Prairie Stars (2-3) were paced by 18 points and five rebounds from Nick Livas.
