Two years after surviving the Alaskan cold as part of the BP Top of the World Classic, the Flames now find themselves in 80-plus degree weather in the middle of November while getting ready to take on a field that includes the likes of Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, Baylor, Wichita State, Charlotte and Monmouth.
UIC is off to a hot start, downing Bradley in its season opener and beating UIS handily in its second game of the year. The Flames are averaging a Horizon League-leading 82.5 points per game as a team while shooting nearly 60 percent (.595) from three-point land.
The Flames outscored their first two foes by an average of 17.5 ppg.
The beginning of 2007-08 has been highlighted by career-high scoring performances. Junior guard Josh Mayo went off for 34 points against Bradley on Saturday, followed by junior center Scott VanderMeer's career-best 19 points versus UIS.
Friday's game is the first meeting between UIC and Winthrop (1-0), the defending Big South champion and qualifiers for seven of the last nine NCAA Tournaments.
