Chicago, Ill.- Baggio Husidic scored the game-winning goal in the 94th minute to send the UIC men's soccer team to a 1-0 overtime win over Loyola at Loyola Soccer Park on Saturday night.
The victory gives UIC (8-5-5, 4-1-3 Horizon League) the No. 3 seed and a first-round bye in the upcoming Horizon League Tournament while handing the Ramblers (10-4-4, 5-1-2 Horizon League) their first league loss of the season.
In another spirited edition of the annual Chicago derby, UIC and Loyola went back-and-forth on the attack throughout. The Flames turned up the offensive pressure in the second period, outshooting the host side 9-3 during the final 45 minutes of regulation.
Neither team could scratch the scoreboard during the first 90 minutes, sending the match into overtime. There the Flames were able to get the ball deep into Loyola territory, where a free kick into the box developed into a quality UIC chance as Robert Younger lifted a ball off his noggin that carried to the right, finding the younger Husidic in front of goal with a clean look that was converted on a rocket shot over the reach of Loyola keeper Brian Byrne.
Jovan Bubonja made three saves and directed a defense that turned in its ninth shutout of 2007.
Back Pat McMahon and the entire UIC defense kept league-leading scorer Michael Ferguson in check, marking the speedy forward well and forcing the striker to attempt shots without much clear viewing.
UIC will host the winner of this Friday's Wright State-Valparaiso match at Flames Field on Sunday, Nov. 12 at 7:00 p.m. Central.
