Chicago, Ill.- UIC junior guard Josh Mayo (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville H.S.) was named the Horizon League Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the period ending Dec. 10, the league office announced on Monday.
Mayo averaged 30.5 points per game in two Horizon League contests this past week.
In the Flames' league opener against Milwaukee this past Thursday, Mayo scored 29 points in just 27 minutes to pace the Flames to a 91-73 victory over the Panthers. The junior guard was 10-for-12 from the field and 5-for-6 from beyond the arc.
Against Green Bay this past Saturday, Mayo lit up the scoreboard for 32 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field and 6-of-9 shooting from downtown to help the Flames go 2-0 in league action for the second consecutive season after securing a 76-67 win over the Phoenix.
Mayo shot 68 percent (19-of-28) from the field overall and hit from behind the three-point line at a clip of 73 percent (11-for-15) in the two victories this past week.
The junior guard has been lights-out at home. In four games at the Pavilion this season Mayo is shooting 65 percent (35-for-54) from the field while making his three-point attempts at a rate of 68 percent (17-for-25) to average 27.0 ppg at home.
This is the second time this season that Mayo has been named Horizon League Player of the Week. He earned the first weekly league award of the season on Nov. 12 after posting a career-high 34 points against Bradley on Nov. 10. It is the third time in his career that he has won the award.
UIC returns to the hardwood this Saturday, Dec. 15 against DePaul at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. Central.
