Chicago, Ill. - Freshman Jessie Miller guided the UIC basketball team to a 76-70 win over Butler on Saturday night at the Pavilion. The Flames (15-9, 9-3) move into second place in the Horizon League after notching their eighth straight victory against the Bulldogs. Miller shot 72 percent from the field (8-for-11), while draining 3-of-4 from three-point land.
Senior LaShonda Grant shot 62 percent from the field (5-for-8) and hit three treys on the night to total 18 points. Seniors Jacquay Holmes and Krystal Hugelier led the Flames with six rebounds each. Sophomore Ashley Hluska picked up a season-high eight points and five boards.
Four Butler players scored in double figures with sophomore Lade Akande pacing the team with 19 points. Susan Lester pulled down a team-best seven rebounds.
With 11:41 on the clock in the first half, Butler's Lester tied the score at 11-11 on a layup to cap an 8-4 run.
Trailing by two points, Miller regained the lead for the Flames on a three pointer (16-15).
The Bulldogs began to spark offensively, gaining their largest lead of seven points (30-23) late in the half.
Miller then drained her second trey of the game to help cut the deficit to five points at halftime (35-30).
UIC trailed for the first eight minutes of the second half until Miller hit a breakaway layup for a one-point lead (38-37).
Butler responded and regained the advantage for the next eight minutes. Trailing by six points, Hugelier knotted the game (65-65) with 3:33 remaining on a three pointer, eventually taking the lead on another trey by Grant.
Butler got within one point (71-70) with 1:28 on the clock, but the Flames held on for the 76-70 victory.
UIC takes a break from conference action on Tuesday, Feb. 13 when they battle Chicago State at 7:00 p.m.
