Chicago, Ill.- Two event wins from Annie Kachman and career-best winning tallies by Ashley Thurston and Justine Weyer highlighted the UIC women's gymnastics team's victory over Western Michigan at the Physical Education Building on Saturday night.
The Flames held on to beat the Broncos with an overall score of 192.125. Western Michigan posted a 191.900.
Kachman and Weyer each scored a 9.8 on vault to share the title. The score was a personal best for the rookie.
Thurston kept the Flames' momentum going with a winning 9.85 on bars to set a new career-high score of her own.
Zandre Labuschagne and Jessie Jaworowicz would share second place on beam by posting identical 9.65 performances.
With the Flames ahead by .1 of a point heading into the final rotation, things seemed to unravel a bit for the home squad. Three consecutive floor falls to open the closing session chipped into the UIC advantage, but Beth Kliver, Rachael Zelinski and Annie Kachman put the Flames back in the driver's seat with three straight solid scores.
Kachman won the floor exercise with a 9.8, while Kliver's second-place 9.775 was a career-best posting. Zelinski turned in a 9.725 on the event.
The Flames head to Denton, Texas to face Midwest Independent rivals TWU and Illinois State along with Boise State on February 17th.
