Bloomington, Ill.- A late rally by the UIC women's tennis team came up just short against Illinois State in a 4-3 loss at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington.
The Flames fell to 9-7 overall, while the Redbirds improved to 11-7.
A tight doubles session went in favor of the host Redbirds after Callan Smith and Grace Gill-Morlis fell just a point short in a close, point-deciding 9-8 contest at the No. 1 spot.
After Illinois State won at No. 2 and No. 4 singles to take a 3-0 lead, the Flames posted a furious rally to close the gap. Amy Jellish rebounded from a first-set loss at the sixth spot to win the final two frames, 6-3, 6-0, while Smith engaged in a back-and-forth 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 No. 1 singles match against Katri Miller that went in the UIC senior's favor.
With the match on the line, Gill-Morlis gave it her all in another three-set contest, but the junior fell on the wrong end against Veroni Parke-Bedard at No. 3 singles to give Illinois State the win.
Jenna Reisch came away with a No. 5 singles win late for UIC's third point.
UIC heads to Indianapolis to play Butler this Thursday.
