Chicago, Ill. - The UIC men's basketball team released its 2007-08 schedule on Thursday with clashes versus in-state rivals DePaul, Bradley and Illinois State, along with a trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands for the Paradise Jam, highlighting a rigorous 30-game slate.
The Flames open the regular season on Saturday, November 10 by hosting Bradley at the UIC Pavilion, in the first of 13 home dates. This will mark the first time UIC and the Braves will have squared off on the Flames' home floor. Other non-league home games for UIC include tilts with Illinois-Springfield (Nov. 13), Toledo (Dec. 19) and Howard (Dec. 22).
The road portion of the Flames' schedule starts with a trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands for the Paradise Jam, Nov. 16-19. The three-game tournament features 2006 NCAA Tournament teams Notre Dame, Georgia Tech and Winthrop, as well as Baylor, Wichita State, Charlotte and Monmouth.
UIC opens play in the event on Nov. 16 by taking on Winthrop, and will then meet either Charlotte or Georgia Tech in the tournament's second round.
The Flames return from paradise for back-to-back road tilts at Central Michigan (Nov. 28) and Illinois State (Dec. 1). UIC will travel across town to take on DePaul at Allstate Arena on Dec. 15 and play its final game of the calendar year at Akron on Dec. 29. The Flames will also play on the road this season for the annual ESPN BracketBusters game to conclude its non-league schedule.
With the addition of Valparaiso to the Horizon League this season, UIC will play 18 league games with action kicking off in early December. The Flames open Horizon League play on Dec. 6 by hosting Milwaukee, before squaring off with Green Bay on Dec. 8.
Other key home dates during the Horizon League loop include UIC's clash with cross-town foe Loyola on Saturday, Jan. 12, a showdown with NCAA Tournament `Sweet 16' team Butler on Feb. 20, and a contest versus new league-mate Valparaiso on Feb. 11.
Head Coach Jimmy Collins' 2007-08 squad is anchored by three returning starters in juniors Josh Mayo (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) and Scott VanderMeer (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) and senior Robert Bush (Harvey, Ill./Thornton).
