Chicago, Ill. - After clinching their season opener, the Flames fell short to host Northwestern (20-30, 26-30, 21-30) in the Chicagoland Challenge championship match in Evanston on Saturday night in three games. Moving to 1-1 on the season, the Flames look ahead to the College of Charleston Invitational on Labor Day weekend in South Carolina.
Sophomore Katerina Hanackova recorded an impressive performance for the second consecutive night with eight kills and eight digs against the Wildcats for all-tournament team honors. Sophomore Lana Lobdell also tabbed eight kills and led the squad with a .538 offensive clip.
Also named to the all-tournament team was sophomore Casie Sullivan after totaling seven kills. Junior Christin Hunt paced UIC at the net with three blocks.
Courtnie Paulus guided the Northwestern with 15 kills and a .464 attack percentage. Lindsay Anderson totaled a team-best 14 digs and four service aces.
Recording a .325 attack percentage, the Wildcats took the early lead over the Flames with 19 kills and four blocks in game one (30-20).
Trailing 4-1, UIC posted a 14-7 run to take a four-point lead (15-11) at the mid-point of game two. Despite the setback, the Wildcats rallied to pull ahead and take a 2-0 advantage in the match with a 30-26 victory.
Northwestern then clinched the Chicagoland Challenge championship on their home court after capturing a 30-21 victory in game three.
UIC battles the University of Charlotte for the first time in school history to kick off the College of Charleston Invitational on Friday, Aug. 31 at 1:00 p.m. CST.
