Valparaiso Edges UIC Volleyball In Five Games

Valparaiso, Ind. - Valparaiso (9-3, 1-0) edged UIC (8-6, 1-2) in five games on Friday night at the Athletics-Recreation Center. Sophomore Katerina Hanackova led the Flames with 18 kills and 11 digs.

Junior Christin Hunt owned a team-best .348 attack percentage with 10 kills and three blocks against the Crusaders. Sophomore Lana Lobdell picked up 13 kills and tied the team-high with six blocks. Freshman Dana Van Syckle tabbed a season-high six blocks, while also totaling a team-best three service aces.

Valpo's Angie Porche led the team with 21 kills and 14 digs. Tara Newton owned a team-high six blocks, while posting a .316 attack percentage. Valerie Bollenbacher totaled 17 kills and two blocks.

Valpo recorded 20 kills and a .486 attack percentage in game one en route to a 30-24 victory. Porche and Bollenbacher each notched six kills to help give the Crusaders a 1-0 advantage.

UIC took an early 4-2 lead in game two, but Valpo bounced back with consecutive points to tie it at 4-4. The Flames then sparked a 4-0 run and extended their lead, eventually tying up the match (30-22). UIC held Valpo to a .140 offensive clip, forcing the squad to commit nine errors.

The Flames continued their offensive burst in game three, taking an early 14-7 advantage. The Crusaders sparked a run late in the frame to get within one point (23-22), but UIC held on for the 30-25 victory.

Game four remained tight until Valparaiso went on a 9-2 run for a seven-point lead (27-20). The Crusaders sent the match into a fifth and final game after posting a .317 attack percentage (30-22).

Despite leading early in game five, Valpo pushed ahead to an 8-3 advantage on four straight points. The Crusaders edged UIC, 15-7, for the match victory.

The Flames travel to Kalamazoo, Mich. to square off against Western Michigan on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 6:00 p.m. CST.
