Chicago, Ill. - Despite an impressive second half, the UIC women's basketball team was edged by Valparaiso, 72-63, on Thursday night at the Pavilion. Freshman Taylor Manley notched a season-high 18 points against the Crusaders.
Manley drained six treys on the night and added a team-high four assists. Freshman Shanice Sadler also tabbed a season-best 12 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double.
Sophomore Cassie Johnson picked up a season-high 10 rebounds, while sophomore Jessie Miller totaled seven points and eight boards on the night. Sophomore Briana Hinkle also added 10 points with two assists and one steal.
Junior Aimee Litka led Valpo with 28 points and nine rebounds. Litka was 9-for-13 from the field and 6-for-8 from the behind the arc.
Valpo jumped out to a 12-4 start at the 14:40 mark in the first half. UIC answered with nine straight points to knot the game at 12-12. The Flames and Crusaders continued to exchange points before UIC sparked a 5-1 run with less than two minutes on the clock.
The Crusaders drained five straight points to own a 35-34 advantage heading into the break.
Valpo kicked off the second half with six three-pointers in six minutes (52-38). UIC responded with a 16-2 burst to cut the deficit to five points with 9:11 remaining. Sophomore Whitney Farris ended Valpo's drought with a trey at the 7:03 mark.
Manley hit her sixth three-pointer of the game to get UIC within two points (65-63) with less than a minute left in regulation. Despite a second-half surge, the Crusaders edged the Flames, 72-63.
The Flames continue their home slate on Saturday, Jan. 12 when they square off against Butler at 4:30 p.m.
