Valparaiso, Ind. - The UIC volleyball team downed Valparaiso in five sets (18-25, 25-20, 26-24, 15-25, 17-15) on Saturday night on the road.
Katerina Hanackova and Casie Sullivan each picked up a double-double against Valpo. Hanackova led the Flames with 14 kills, while Katarina Nedeljkovic totaled a team-best 20 digs.
Angie Porche paced the Crusaders with 24 kills. Brittany Malicoat registered a match-high 32 digs.
Valparaiso controlled set one with a solid performance on both sides of the net. The Crusaders recorded a .325 attack percentage, while holding the Flames to a .114 clip. Valpo jumped out to a 14-5 start to open the match. Trailing 23-14, UIC notched three straight points to get within five, but the Crusaders answered to take a 1-0 match advantage (25-18).
UIC bounced back with a 7-1 burst in set two. Valparaiso attempted a comeback late in the frame, but fell short as the Flames took set two by five points, 25-20.
Down 12-9, the Flames got within two points with a 3-0 run halfway through the third set. UIC recorded six straight points in the final frame to win in extra points, 26-24.
Holding UIC to zero attack percentage, Valpo pushed the match into a final set with a 25-15 win.
Set five was a nailbiter which was decided in extra points. UIC led early, but Valpo recorded three straight points to tie the set at 10-10. Knotted at 15-15, the Flames captured the match victory on a kill and a Crusader attack error.
UIC wraps up this weekend's action with a 1 p.m. match against Butler on Sunday.
