Milwaukee, Wis. - The UIC volleyball team suffered a heartbreaker on Wednesday night as the Flames fell to Milwaukee in five sets (23-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-23, 12-15) at the Klotsche Center.
Katarina Nedeljkovic recorded a season-high 18 kills and a career-high 23 digs. Katerina Hanackova also picked up a double-double with 14 kills and 20 digs. Jessica Dalke totaled 23 assists and 10 digs.
Becky Peters led Milwaukee with 17 kills, while Lauren Felsing registered a match-high 30 digs.
Down two sets, UIC (6-11, 1-5) refused to go quietly and evened the score with two straight wins in the third and fourth set. Tied at 8-8 in the deciding set, Milwaukee (12-5, 5-1) went on a 4-2 run to take a two-point lead (12-10). The Flames knotted the fifth set once more before the Panthers recorded three straight points for the match victory.
UIC led briefly in the first set (21-17) before Milwaukee sparked an 8-2 burst to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Set two was a tight battle with seven ties. Milwaukee was one point shy of taking a two-set advantage, but the Flames notched two straight to get within one point. Peters then captured the set victory for the Panthers with a kill.
Following a 10-minute break, the Flames came out strong in set three with a .316 attack percentage. UIC trailed by as much as four points late in the frame, but turned around the momentum following a timeout. The Flames then went on a 10-4 run to take set three, 25-23.
UIC was impressive defensively in the fourth set, holding Milwaukee to a .021 clip. Tied at 20-20, the Flames pushed the match into a final set after recording a 5-3 run.
The Flames face Valparaiso on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. in Indiana. UIC rounds out its weekend action with a 1 p.m. matchup at Butler on Sunday, Oct. 12.
