Chicago, Ill. - The UIC women's basketball team's five-game winning streak was snapped on Thursday night as the Flames fell to Cal Poly, 72-60, at the UIC Pavilion.
"We had moments of greatness, but we need to sustain that play for 40 minutes," said head coach Lisa Ryckbosch.
Jasmine Bailey recorded 16 points and a team-high nine rebounds. She was 6-for-11 from the field and drained two three-pointers. Jessie Miller chipped in 16 points, three assists and four steals against the Mustangs.
Lisa McBride led Cal Poly's (6-4) offense with 18 points, while Megan Harrison totaled a team-best nine rebounds.
UIC (5-1) recorded four straight points halfway through the first half to take a three-point lead (17-14), but Cal Poly quickly answered with a layup by Kristina Santiago to regain the advantage.
After several scoreless minutes, the Mustangs extended their lead to seven points (24-17) on a three-pointer from Ashlee Burns.
A three-pointer from UIC's Shameia Green, followed by a jumper by Ashley Hluska cut the deficit to one point with 6:26 on the clock. Cal Poly then put together a short 6-0 burst late in the half to head into intermission with a 29-24 lead.
Bailey knotted the contest for the fourth time on a three-pointer just minutes into the second half. The Mustangs responded with a 7-2 run to earn their first double-digit advantage (53-43).
Trailing by nine with 6:12 left in regulation, the Flames made once last push with five unanswered points to get within four (58-54), but Cal Poly sealed the victory with a late run and several trips to the line.
UIC is back in action on Saturday, Dec. 20 when they head to DeKalb, Ill. to battle Northern Illinois at 2 p.m. CST.
