Indianapolis, Ind. - Despite a second-half run, the UIC women's basketball team fell to Butler, 56-48, on Thursday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Sophomore Briana Hinkle tabbed a team-high 15 points.
UIC falls to 8-13 overall and 4-6 in league play, while Butler moves to 15-6 on the season and 5-5 in conference action.
Hinkle pulled down five rebounds and added two assists. The sophomore also picked up a team-best three blocks and three steals. Junior Nikki Grobbecker owned a team-high 10 boards. Sophomore Jessie Miller and freshman Shanice Sadler each totaled seven points apiece.
Freshman Brittany Bowen led Butler with 20 points. Junior Lade Akande picked up a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
UIC trailed by seven (14-7) at the 11:20 mark in the first half, but bounced back and got within two points on two occasions. Butler had a six-point advantage with 1:40 remaining, but freshman Ashley Tomzik drained a three-pointer to cut the deficit to three points at halftime (26-23).
Butler extended its lead in the second half, eventually taking a 10-point advantage with 6:13 on the clock. UIC turned up the heat on both ends of the court and sparked an 8-0 run to only trail by two points (48-46) with 2:22 left in regulation. The Bulldogs tightened up on defense in the final minutes to top the Flames, 56-48
The Flames totaled six more blocks than the Bulldogs (7-1).
The Flames face Valparaiso on Sat., Feb. 9 at Athletics-Recreation Center at 1:35 p.m. CST.
