Chicago, Ill. - The UIC volleyball team fell in four sets to in-state rival Illinois State in its final match of the Chicago Classic at Mother McAuley on Saturday night.
Casie Sullivan led UIC with 13 kills. Katerina Hanackova registered a team-high 14 digs. Lana Lobdell was named to the all-tournament team after averaging a .258 attack percentage with 24 kills and four blocks in three matches.
Peggy Riessen picked up a double-double with 17 kills and 10 digs.
UIC led 4-1 early in set one until the Redbirds went on a 7-1 run. The Flames got within one point (11-10), but Illinois State recorded a second burst (8-1) to extend its lead to six points. UIC was unable to close the gap, falling 25-18 in the first set.
Leading 4-2 in set two, ISU quickly recovered with 12 straight points. The Redbirds continued its offensive rally to capture set two, 25-15.
Illinois State controlled the set before the Flames inched their way back to tie it up at 14-14. The Flames took their first lead of the set on an Illinois State error. The final frame of set three was a tough battle with the lead changing four times before UIC recorded two straight to win in extra points (29-27).
The Redbirds posted a .533 attack percentage in the fourth set to coast to the match victory (25-10).
UIC heads to Ohio next weekend for its first Horizon League contest against Youngstown State on Friday, Sept. 19.
