CHICAGO- The UIC men's basketball team begins the 2009 side of its slate this Saturday, Jan. 3 against Horizon League rival Green Bay at the UIC Pavilion beginning at 7 p.m.
The 77th meeting between the Flames (8-4, 1-1 Horizon League) and the Phoenix (9-4, 2-0 Horizon League) will air live on WIND 560 AM, with Adam Levinson calling the action and UIC great Kenny Williams providing expert analysis.
The contest will also be streamed live for fans' viewing pleasure on the Horizon League Network.
Saturday's game against Green Bay, a team that has won two straight on the road and three consecutive contests overall, stands as a critical outing for the Flames. After Tuesday's home loss to Milwaukee, UIC seeks to build momentum heading into a rigorous league stretch that features six of the next eight on the road during the rest of the month of January.
The Flames went 5-2 in December, thanks in large part to 7-foot senior center Scott VanderMeer. VanderMeer averaged 14.3 ppg and 9.9 rpg in seven games last month.
Fellow frontcourt mate Jeremy Buttell also closed out 2008 in strong fashion, adding 7.4 ppg and 5.8 rpg in five starts during December.
Senior guard Josh Mayo continues to sit atop the Horizon League scoring charts by averaging a conference-best 19.3 ppg.
