Chicago, Ill. - The UIC women's basketball team kicked off Horizon League action on a high note with a 60-47 win over Wright State on Saturday afternoon at the UIC Pavilion.
Shameia Green not only led the Flames (7-4, 1-0) in the win over Wright State (4-8, 0-1), but the redshirt freshman also recorded a career-high 15 points. Jasmine Bailey was 5-for-10 from the field, totaling 12 points. Bailey also tallied a team-best seven rebounds and six steals.
Meghan Hutchens tied her career-best with five assists, while Cassie Johnson totaled three blocks.
LaShawna Thomas paced the Raiders with 17 points. Molly Fox pulled down a team-high 10 boards.
"A lot of different players contributed in tonight's victory," said head coach Lisa Ryckbosch. We are pleased to win our Horizon League opener."
UIC's tough defense held Wright State to just five points in the first ten minutes of play in the first half.
Trailing 12-5, the Raiders put together a 10-5 run to cut the deficit to one point with 7:38 on the clock.
Wright State took a 17-16 lead following two successful trips to the free throw line.
A steal from Bailey that resulted in a layup by Jessie Miller gave the Flames a brief advantage with 1:08 remaining in the first stanza, but WSU quickly answered with a two-point bucket to head into halftime tied at 25 all.
UIC opened the second half with a 15-6 burst, eventually earning its first double-figure lead of the game on a jumper from Miller.
Back-to-back trips to the charity stripe gave UIC a 20-point lead with under five minutes in the clock.
The Raiders attempted a comeback with five straight points, but Heidi Dahnke diminished their momentum on a long jumper with 2:48 left in regulation.
UIC returns to the Pavilion on Monday, Jan. 5 when they host Detroit at 7 p.m.
