CHICAGO - The UIC women's gymnastics team was unable to pick up its first win of the season as Western Michigan narrowly defeated the Flames, 191.875-191.575.
The Flames held the lead through two rotations courtesy of a season-best team performance on the uneven bars, as UIC took the top five spots in the event. Zandre Labuschagne put up a season-best 9.8 to guide fellow teammates Karen Morales (9.775), Christine Girard and Andrea Skala (9.725) and Annie Kachman (9.650). But miscues on the beam took their toll on the final score, pushing the meet in the Bronco's favor.
Skala went on to take first in a pair of events, winning on the floor (9.775) and leading a 1-2-3 Flames punch on the vault with Ashley Thurston and Kachman (9.725) tying for second.
The senior Kachman would go on to tie for first in the all-around (38.650) as Skala would take sixth with a 38.200 score.
The Flames stay in the city of Chicago for the IGI Chicago Style Invitational, held at Navy Pier on Friday, February 7 at 7 p.m.
