GREEN BAY, Wis.- The UIC men's basketball team could not dig out of an early hole against host Green Bay in an 85-59 loss to the Phoenix at the Resch Center on Saturday night.
Zavion Neely led the Flames (1-5, 0-2 Horizon League) with 15 points. K.C. Robbins had 10 points and nine boards, and Jeremy Buttell added 10 points.
Green Bay (8-2, 2-0 Horizon League) was led by Rahmon Fletcher's 22 points.
The Phoenix broke open a three-point game in the early moments by rattling off a 10-0 run and shooting 63.3 percent (19-for-30) from the floor in the first half to build a 20-point lead.
UIC would cut a 29-point second-half deficit to 15 on an Austin Hood basket with over eight minutes left in regulation, but the Flames could not get any closer.
Green Bay finished shooting 55.6 percent (30-for-54), while UIC shot just 35.5 percent (22-for-62).
Turnovers plagued the Flames, as the Phoenix converted 19 total takeaways into 22 points. UIC mustered just 6 assists, and the Flames turned the ball over 12 times during the opening 20 minutes of play.
Spencer Stewart made his 2009-10 debut, coming off the bench to play 12 minutes and hand out four of UIC's six assists.
UIC will have the week off for final exams and return to action on Sunday, Dec. 13, wrapping a four-game road stretch against crosstown rival DePaul at the Allstate Arena beginning at 5 p.m. The game will air live on ESPN Radio 1000 AM.
