CHICAGO - Josh Mayo scored a game-high 22 points as the UIC men's basketball team defeated Detroit, 64-53, at the UIC Pavilion on Tuesday night.
Robo Kreps and Scott VanderMeer added 10 points apiece, and Jeremy Buttell pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds as the Flames (11-13, 4-10 Horizon League) snapped a five-game losing streak.
The Flames broke open a tie game midway through the first half by outscoring the Titans (7-17, 2-12 Horizon League) 16-10 to close out the first half and take an 11-point lead into the break.
Detroit would pull within five early in the second half, but back-to-back threes by Mayo and Tori Boyd capped an 8-0 run that put UIC up by 14.
The Titans would close to within six with just under four remaining, but another Boyd trey and a Kreps bucket gave the hosts breathing room the rest of the way.
UIC takes on 15th-ranked Butler inside Hinkle Fieldhouse this Friday night at 6 p.m. Central in a nationally-televised game on ESPNU.
