Detroit, Mich. - A 10-0 Detroit run to start the second half proved to be the difference on Thursday night as the Titans topped the UIC women's basketball team, 63-55, at Calihan Hall.
Detroit (10-18, 6-11) hit its first four shots coming out of the locker room after halftime, turning a one-point lead into a 35-24 advantage at the 16:22 mark in the second period. The Flames (14-14, 8-9) would whittle the Titans' lead down to four on a trio of occasions, but could not get any closer, dropping their fifth straight road decision.
Redshirt freshman Shameia Green led UIC with 14 points and three assists. Senior Meghan Hutchens (12 points) and rookie Jasmine Bailey (12 points) also scored in double figures for the Flames.
Senior Sandi Brown paced Detroit with a game-high 21 points, while adding five rebounds.
UIC did out-rebound the Titans, 41-32, but Detroit had a better shooting night, converting 45 percent of its field goal attempts, including a 50 percent clip in the second half. The Flames were limited to just 35 percent shooting.
With the loss, UIC dropped to sixth place in the Horizon League standings. Valparaiso (15-12, 10-7) secured fourth place on Thursday night with its win at Cleveland State (18-11, 12-5), while Wright State (13-15, 9-8), the Flames' opponent on Saturday, is now a game ahead of UIC for fifth place.
The Flames would move up and earn the No. 5 seed in next week's league tournament, and play a quarterfinal game at Valparaiso on Wednesday, with a win over the Raiders on Saturday.
