YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The UIC volleyball team bounced back less than 24 hours after a frustrating loss on Friday night against Cleveland State to beat the Youngstown State Penguins on Saturday, 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 24-26, 17-25).

The Flames (10-12, 5-5 Horizon League) got off to a rocky start on Saturday afternoon after falling behind on the road, 5-1 early in set number one. Following a timeout, UIC seemed to right the ship and went on a 6-1 run of their own to tie things at seven. The two squads traded a few more runs through the first, but it was the Flames who made the bigger final push, finishing off the Penguins on a 7-3 run to seal the win in the first, 25-23.

The second set followed a similar pattern of the two teams trading off runs, but this time it was Youngstown State (2-20, 0-9 Horizon League) that rose to the occasion and came away with a 25-20 triumph. Leading 20-19, the Penguins scored five of the final six points to even the match at one set apiece.

UIC grabbed the lead back following a come-from-behind 26-24 win. The Flames found themselves trailing 21-20, but true to form they refused to back down and forced the Penguins to commit several costly errors including a pair of attacking miscues with the set knotted at 24 to five UIC a 2-1 lead in the match.

With an important conference victory in sight, the Flames turned up the heat in the fourth set and buried Youngstown State, 25-17.

"I thought we played much better defense at the end," said UIC head coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley. "We got some big stops when we needed them."

Kelsey Safranek continued a fantastic weekend and registered a double-double for the second straight day, notching 18 kills and an equal number of digs. 18 kills for the Downers Grove, Ill. native ties a career high which was set on Friday at Cleveland State.

Aubrey Sniegowski also registered double-digit kills for the Flames with a career-high 18. Janise Dismuke also added double-digit kills for UIC with 11.

"Kelsey and Aubrey helped us out offensively. It was a total team effort to get this win. We got big contributions from a lot of areas today," said Schumacher-Cawley.

Kate Eldred made the most of her opportunity to join the starting lineup with a career-high 18 digs and five kills for the Flames. Libero Taylor Szatkowski recorded 20 digs for UIC.

The Flames will remain idle until Friday, Oct. 22 when they continue the four-match road trip in Rogers Park against the Loyola Ramblers at 7 p.m. The trip wraps up on Saturday, Oct. 23 when they Flames head east to face the Valparaiso Crusaders at 6 p.m.

"We still have a lot of work to do," said Schumacher-Cawley. "Next weekend we face two more great teams in Loyola and Valparaiso. We have to get better every single day."
