CHICAGO - In one of its final tune-ups prior to the exhibition season, UIC's Blue team topped the Red squad, 49-29, in a 30-minute public scrimmage at the UIC Pavilion Friday night. Senior guards Dipanjot Singh and Robo Kreps captured the individual titles in the ensuing three-point shooting and dunk contests.

The Blue team, comprised of seniors Paul Carter, Brad Birton, K.C. Robbins, Jimmy Harding and Singh, along with juniors Daniel Barnes and sophomore Corey Gray, was led by Carter's 14 points and seven rebounds. Birton, Robbins and Gray each chipped in eight points, while Barnes scored seven. The squad shot 52.8 percent (19-36) from the field, and drilled four three-pointers, including two from Gray.

The Red team was led by Kreps' 10 points. He was joined by junior Zavion Neely (7), freshman Eddie Denard (4), and juniors Darrin Williams, Matt Bush and Dorian Tyler, along with sophomores Anthony Kelley and Arman Rasul, who all chipped in two points. Denard led the Red squad in rebounding with seven caroms.

The teams played a full 20-minute first half, with the Blue team racing out to a 34-22 lead at the break. The second half was an abbreviated 10 minutes in length, and the Blue squad out-scored the Red team, 15-7. The Red squad scored 16 of its 29 points in the paint.

Gray, Kreps, Singh, Bush, Harding and Barnes all competed in the three-point contest, with each player receiving 40 seconds to knock down as many threes as possible. Singh impressed the crowd by converting a team-high 10 field goals, while Gray and Bush each hit five threes.

In the ensuing dunk contest, Birton, Tyler, Kreps, Carter, Kelley, Robbins and Neely all competed, receiving three attempts to show their creativity above the rim. Kreps sealed the win with an alley-oop, one-handed dunk - he corralled the ball half-way between the free throw line and the rim, and finished with a flush as his teammates all stood to cheer the 6-foot-1 guard on. The dunk came on his third and final attempt.

The UIC men's basketball team, under the leadership of first-year head coach Howard Moore, returns nine letterwinners, including three starters and its top-two scorers (Kreps and Neely) from the 2009-10 campaign. The Flames will play their lone exhibition game next Wednesday (Nov. 3), taking on Illinois-Springfield at the UIC Pavilion beginning at 7:30 p.m.
