DAYTON, Ohio - Fueled by a balanced offensive attack, the UIC men's soccer team scored three goals in the first half, and cruised to a convincing 4-0 win over host Wright State at Alumni Field Sunday afternoon. Goalkeeper Peter Kikloski preserved a shutout in his first career start, as the Flames picked up their first Horizon League victory.
Senior Robert Younger got things going with his first career goal in the eighth minute, followed by tallies from Drew Wolfe and Paul Tracy in the respective 32nd and 38th minutes, as UIC (3-6, 1-2 Horizon) took a commanding 3-0 halftime lead. Redshirt junior Derek Huffman then added his team-leading fourth goal of the season 15 minutes into the second frame.
UIC head coach Sean Phillips was pleased with his team's defensive effort, which in turn, led to the timely offense. Two of the Flames' goals came on set-up corner kicks.
"Defensively, we were nice and sound today, and that allowed us to attack on offense with purpose," said Phillips. "We had some guys put their body on the line on offense, particularly Robert Younger, who scored his first collegiate goal to get us on the board. That gave us a chance to have some breathing room, and allowed our defense to play with confidence and continue to execute our game plan.
"It was great to see Peter Kikloski get a shutout in his first career start, and Eric Frazier and Derek Huffman continue to work well together up top. The man of the match today, though, was Paul Tracy. He allowed us to control the middle of the midfield, and came up big with a goal and an assist. He's really responded well to the challenges we've put in front of him."
Tracy also assisted on the Flames' second goal, along with senior midfielder Tim Walsh. Felipe Carrasco picked up the assist on Tracy's tally, while junior Eric Frazier recorded the helper on Huffman's goal. Nineteen players saw action for the Flames, who recorded their first road win of the season.
UIC will head to Indianapolis next Saturday (Oct. 9) to take on No. 14 Butler, beginning at 3 p.m.
"Ever since I've been here, our games against Butler have always been a battle," Phillips said. "Coach (Kelly) Findley has done a great job resurrecting that program, and getting them into the national spotlight. Playing against a nationally-ranked, undefeated team on the road is going to be a great challenge for our guys, and one we're looking forward to."
