PEORIA, Ill. - Led by an outstanding performance by junior Brian Denk, the UIC cross country squad earned a 12th place finish at the NCAA Midwest Regional on Saturday, held at Newman Golf Course in downstate Illinois.

The Darien, Ill. native earned All-Region accolades for his 25th-place finish, crossing the line of the 10k course in 30:37.

"A tremendous effort by Brian today," said head coach Jim Knoedel. "To make the All-Regional team against some of the toughest competition in the nation speaks volumes about the type of season Brian had this year."

Sam Kehoe and Tyler Hinckley were the Flames' second and third finishers, finishing in 80th and 85th, respectively.

Siblings Angelos and Photis Karkalis rounded out the top five scorers for UIC with only slight separation at the finish, as Angelos was 134th and Photis closed out his first season in a Flames' kit in 136th place. Arash Darbandi (161st) and Robert Anderson (170th) rounded out the contingent for UIC in Peoria.

In a tight team battle that saw the 12th through 17th-place teams separated by a mere 37 points, UIC finished in 12th with 436 points. The Flames emerged as the top team from the Horizon League, defeating Loyola (14th place, 443 points), as well as fellow city foe DePaul (20th place, 553 points).

Oklahoma narrowly defeated Oklahoma State, 43 to 50 points, to earn the two automatic berths to the NCAA championships in Terre Haute, Ind. on November 22.
