CHICAGO - The UIC women's basketball team opened the home portion of the 2010-11 schedule on Monday evening at the UIC Pavilion, but the home team fell to the Oakland Golden Grizzlies, 69-58.

The Flames (1-1) were done in on Monday in large part by 21 turnovers. UIC shot just below 33-percent in the game and the team recorded only nine assists on 23 made baskets. It also marked the second straight game in which UIC committed at least 20 miscues.

"You're going to have games where you don't shoot the ball well," said UIC head coach Lisa Ryckbosch. "When that happened, when the shots didn't fall, we completely fell apart and we couldn't overcome that."

Ryckbosch's squad got off to a quick start in the non-conference game by building a 9-4 lead less than four minutes into the contest following a lay-up by Katie Hannemann off a pretty feed from Shameia Green. However, the Golden Grizzlies (1-1) came storming right back on the heels of a 14-2 run to take an 18-11 lead. The lead was eventually extended to 12 on three occasions in the opening half, however the Flames sliced the lead to only six points as the teams headed to the locker room at the break.

A quick three points to begin the second half brought UIC even closer, but following a timeout by Oakland, the visitors put together another 13-2 run to take a 14-point lead with over 14 minutes to play. The Flames cut the lead to four with 1:20 to play following a leaning jumper by sophomore Taylor Foulks, but that was as close as they would come. Sinking five-of-six free throws down the stretch solidified the win for Oakland.

"The thing I'm most disappointed in is that we just didn't defend. It was too easy for them to get whatever they wanted," said Ryckbosch.

Oakland's Bethany Watterworth led all players with 26 points.

Briana Hinkle paced the Flames with 20 points and steals in the loss. Jasmine Bailey added 10 points and five rebounds.

UIC will continue it's three-game homestand on Wednesday night when they welcome the BYU Cougars to the Pavilion at 7 p.m. The game will also be broadcast live on the Horizon League Network.
