CHICAGO- Event victories by Chantel Turk and Kayleigh Kremer headlined the UIC women's gymnastics team's meet against Midwest Independent rival Illinois State at the Physical Education Building on Friday night.
Turk won the vault title with a 9.775 in her attempt to cap the Flames' first rotation, while Kremer rounded out the meet with a 9.750 on floor exercise to share the event win with Illinois State's Hannah Deutsch.
Karen Morales posted UIC's best beam score with a 9.525, and Christine Girard took runner-up honors on uneven bars with a tally of 9.6.
Andrea Skala led the Flames in the all-around with a second-place score of 38.075, a mark aided by third-place scores on vault (9.6) and bars (9.575).
UIC posted a team score of 189.350. Despite meet-high showings on bars (47.275) and floor exercise (48.575), the Flames fell to the Redbirds, who scored a 191.375.
"Performance-wise, it was our best bars and floor showings all year-long," said UIC co-head coach Peter Jansson. "I was very pleased with our performances there."
UIC was without the services of freshman all-arounder Emily Lawrence, who injured her knee in training this week.
"We did miss Emily," said Jansson. "We definitely have some work to do on vault, the landings just weren't there. We know there is some work to do on beam and vault until we see Illinois State again. They are one of the top two teams in the conference this year, and I think we can catch up with them if we continue to work on those things."
Junior Sarah Murray continues to work her way back from injury and turned in exhibition showings on vault and floor to ease back into the lineup.
The Flames return to the PEB in a week as they host MIC foe Centenary next Friday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. Friday is Vertically Challenged Night, as anyone who stands under 5-foot-1 will receive complimentary admission to the meet.
