Jimmy Collins Receives African-American Coaches Of Excellence Award

Feb. 24, 2010

CHICAGO- UIC head coach Jimmy Collins will receive the African-American Coaches of Excellence Award at Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White's 2010 African-American History Month Celebration this Thursday, Feb. 25.

The celebration takes place at noon on Thursday at the James R. Thompson Center in downtown Chicago.

Collins earned the award for his inspiration to many as a coach and an educator and his commitment to helping others, according to White.

"This is a wonderful honor, especially coming from a man I have so much respect for in Jesse White, our Illinois Secretary of State," said Collins. "I am truly grateful for this award, and I want to thank Secretary of State White, his office and the community."

The African-American History Month Celebration hosted by the Office of the Secretary of State of Illinois will highlight the tremendous contributions of the African-American community in the Chicago area, the state of Illinois and the entire nation.

Prior to the Flames' game against Green Bay that same day at 7 p.m. at the UIC Pavilion, a special Black History Month recognition moment will take place in lieu of the ceremonial Lighting of the Flame.
