YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The UIC women's basketball team got back to its winning ways on Saturday afternoon, knocking off the Youngstown State Penguins, 72-53, at the Beeghly Center.
The Flames (10-12, 7-4 Horizon League) were too strong inside for the Penguins (0-22, 0-11 Horizon League), who dressed only eight players for the game. UIC outscored Youngstown State in the paint, 50-8.
"Offensively, when we have patience and we execute, we get good shots," said head coach Lisa Ryckbosch. "I don't mean to sound like it's that simple, but that's when we've had our best offensive shooting days."
UIC used an early 8-0 run in the second half to put some distance between themselves and the Penguins. With consistent defensive pressure and solid shooting, the Flames were able to build up a 21-point advantage.
Youngstown State was held without a field for 8:11 seconds during a stretch in the second half. Following a jumper by Macey Nortey, the Penguins only points came via the charity stripe until Brandi Brown netted a lay-up with 34 seconds to play.
The Flames' defense held the Penguins to just 20.5 percent shooting (8-for-39) in the first half, however UIC surrendered 15 offensive rebounds to Youngstown State which led to 14 second-chance points.
"We did a good job defensively in terms of making them miss," said head coach Lisa Ryckbosch. "That's a credit to our defense. Sometimes when there's long rebounds, we didn't do a good enough job of running them down."
Shameia Green led the way for UIC, pouring in 17 points. Jessie Miller added 13 to go along with a team-high eight rebounds.
Kenya Middlebrooks was the game's high-scorer. She scored 18 points and was 11-for-14 from the free-throw line. Brown added a game-best 14 rebounds and became the Penguins' all-time leader for a freshman season.
The Flames return home on Thursday night for the first time since Jan. 23rd when they host the Wright State Raiders at the UIC Pavilion. Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
