CHICAGO - The UIC baseball team surrendered five runs to the Western Michigan Broncos in the third inning on Tuesday night and were unable to overcome the deficit, falling 11-6.
After retiring the leadoff batter in the third, UIC (10-18, 6-3 Horizon League) reliever Mike Schoolcraft ran into trouble. The righty walked the next two Western Michigan (6-24, 1-8 MAC) batters before serving up a two-run double to Chris Lewis.
After throwing three balls and a strike to the Broncos' Kyle Galbraith, head coach Mike Dee made a call to the bullpen, summoning another freshman, Charlie Weinberg. Galbraith was issued a free pass, as was the next batter, Tim Cross.
The Broncos would score a total of five runs in the inning.
The Flames mounted a rally in the bottom of the fourth frame. John Rosinski led off the inning with a base hit and the next batter, Joe Betcher, was hit by Mike Moyer's pitch. Catcher Ryan Meehan came to the dish and placed a perfect bunt down the third base line to load the bases for UIC.
The ninth batter in the lineup, shortstop Andy Leonard, cleared the bases when he fought off a tough inside pitch and ripped it past the third base bag. Leonard would come around to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Chris Rutta. That run cut the Western Michigan lead to one, 6-5.
Meehan led off the eighth inning with a double to deep right-centerfield and would come around to score when Steve McGuiggan doubled two batters later.
Jason Ganek, Rosinski and Leonard all collected a pair of hits for the Flames on Tuesday.
Cross walked, was hit by two pitches, ripped an RBI single and scored a trio of runs for Western Michigan in the win.
The defense has been a constant strength for UIC all season. However on this night, it let them down as they committed four errors, which tied a season high.
The Flames also outhit the Broncos, 10 to nine, but were unable to overcome the walks and miscues.
It was the first road win of the season for head coach Randy Ford and the Broncos.
UIC will be right back at Les Miller Field tomorrow night as they host another MAC opponent, the Central Michigan Chippewas, at 5:05 p.m.
