INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The UIC women's tennis sat down Butler 4-1 at the Horizon League Championships on Saturday, as they go for their 14th consecutive conference title.
The teams of Mariya Kovaleva/Kristen McPhillips and Amy Jellish/Jenna Reisch earned wins in their doubles matches, giving the Flames a 1-0 advantage entering singles play.
Kovaleva showed why she was named Horizon League Player of the Year for the second straight year. The sophomore swept Natali Jaimes in two straight sets (6-0, 6-0) to earn the match win.
Illinca Cristescu won her singles match against Gabriella Bobrowski in two sets. Cristescu swept set one 6-0 and finished Bobrowski with a 6-2 win in set two.
Elena Antakova rounded out the day for UIC with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Molly Casperson.
The Flames will look to defend their title when they face Detroit in a rematch of last year's championship match on Sunday April 25. The match is set to begin a 11:30 a.m.
