CHICAGO - The UIC men's soccer team controlled the pace of play for the majority of the second half, but surrendered a goal to visiting Southern Illinois-Edwardsville in the 30th minute, as the Cougars edged the Flames, 1-0, under the lights at Flames Field Thursday night.
There were combined 10 shots in the game, with each team recording five. Peter Hunala had two shots for the Flames, while Eric Frazier and Derek Huffman recorded one apiece. Five players had one shot for the Cougars, with Peter Kelly's first-half tally being the difference - Nash Maduekwe assisted on the goal. There were a rowdy 762 fans in attendance.
SIU-Edwardsville's goal came in transition, on the far right side of the field. Maduekwe's cross cleared mid-way through the 18-yard box, and Kelly slipped the ensuing right-footed shot past UIC goalkeeper Steve Purdy in the lower right corner of the goal.
"This was a tale of two halves tonight," said UIC head coach Sean Phillips. "SIU-E scored on an excellent play in the first half. We made some adjustments at halftime, and really took control of the game. I thought we were going to be able to score at least one, but the last pass tonight was a bit off, and we didn't capitalize on our scoring chances.
"I was very proud of how our younger players that were forced into action played tonight," Phillips added. "It was nice to see them make some positive contributions." SIU-Edwardsville collected eight corner kicks in the game, and UIC was whistled for four more fouls (13-9) than the Cougars. The Flames forced SIU-E goalkeeper Nick Collico into making three saves.
UIC (2-6, 0-1 Horizon) will jump back into Horizon League play Sunday, when the Flames travel to Dayton, Ohio, to take on Wright State. The Raiders will host Loyola Friday night to begin their two-game conference homestand.
