Women's Gymnastics 1/17/2011 12:00:00 AM Flames Edge Broncos in Home Opener Jan. 17, 2011 Final Stats Gymnastike's Coverage CHICAGO, Ill. - The UIC women's gymnastics team notched a home-opening win on Monday afternoon over Western Michigan by a final score of 192.700-192.350. Junior Andie Skala was the meet's All-Around Champion with a four-event score of 38.850. Visit gymnastike.org for more Videos The Broncos struck first and jumped out to a slim .125 lead after the first and second rotations. Sophomore Chantel Turk scored the Flames' highest mark in vault with a 9.75 while Skala and sophomore Erin Duggan produced top scores on the uneven bars with total of 9.700. UIC gained the advantage after a successful third rotation on the balance beam. Senior Emily Fiorilli recorded the Flames' best mark with a 9.675. The fourth rotation had UIC ending the meet on the floor exercise while WMU performed on the beam. As senior Sarah Murray (the Flames' final competitor) took to the floor, UIC held a narrow .250 lead over the Broncos. Without any hesitation, Murray nailed her routine and posted a 9.800, sealing the Flames triumph. Skala posted the meet's top floor score of 9.825. Visit gymnastike.org for more Videos The meet was also a celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. as children from the Chicago Park District were in attendance. The kids had the opportunity to try their hand in bowling, cheerleading, dancing and gymnastics. Patrons of the event were entertained with passages and images from King's historic speeches. After the competition, the gymnastics team held a meet-and-greet autograph session for their fans. UIC returns to action next Sunday at 2 p.m. CT as they travel to Illinois State for a quad meet with Central and Eastern Michigan.
