CHICAGO - The UIC volleyball team won its third-consecutive conference match Friday as the team downed Butler, 3-2 (25-22, 20-25, 25-16, 15-25, 15-11) at the Flames Athletic Center in Chicago, Ill. Redshirt junior Nicole Allgood(Crestwood, Ky./South Oldham) logged a career-high 19 kills to help UIC to the victory.
The Flames (10-5/3-1) edged out their second conference opponent of the season 3-2 as they defeated Green Bay in similar fashion. Junior Kelsey Safranek (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) led all players with 23 kills. Freshman Sara Sternard(Clarendon Hills, Ill./Westmont) added nine kills at a clip of .316.
The Flames picked up the first set in a 25-22 decision. The squad started the set with a three-point run, which included a service ace delivered from Allgood. The two teams traded points until Safranek and Allgood each earned a kill to add two points in another three-point run to place the score at 11-6 in favor of the Flames. Safranek finished off the Butler squad in the first set with back-to-back kills for a 25-22 score.
UIC dropped the second set 20-25 to even the match score to 1-1. Despite leading the Bulldogs 15-9 in kills, Butler committed a mere two errors in the set to capture the win.
The Flames returned to action in the third set and handled the Bulldogs 25-16 to regain the lead at 2-1. UIC posted a .531 hitting percentage as the squad hammered down 19 kills, while committing only two errors. The Flames got hot with a four-point run, which included a kill by Sternard, back-to-back kills by Allgood and was capped off with a service ace by sophomore captain MaryKate Imrie(Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg). Allgood knocked down a kill to propel the Flames squad to the 25-16 victory.
Butler answered again in the fourth set and defeated the Flames 25-15, but it wasn't enough as UIC edged Butler in the deciding set to earn its third-consecutive conference win in a 15-11 outcome.
