CHICAGO - The UIC volleyball team (13-9/6-4 in the Horizon League) handled Green Bay (8-14/4-6), 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 33-31) Friday inside the Flames Athletic Center in Chicago, Ill. Sophomore outside hitter Aubrey Sniegowski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont Township) knocked down 12 kills with a hitting percentage of .706.
"It was truly a great team effort tonight," head coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley said. "I thought everyone played well. Now, we have to come ready for the match against Loyola tomorrow."
Sniegowski led all players in the match with her .706 hitting percentage, while junior Kelsey Safranek (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) led all players with 17 kills in the victory. Safranek earned a double-double as the chipped in 13 digs. Redshirt junior Nicole Allgood (Crestwood, Ky./South Oldham) added 13 kills in the match.
In the first set, the Flames and Phoenix traded points back and forth through much of the match, but with the help of two three-point runs, which included back-to-back solo blocks from freshman Sara Sternard (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Westmont). Safranek capped of the first set with a kill to make the score 25-21 and give UIC a 1-0 edge in the match.
The Flames started the second set on a roll as the squad went on a 5-0 run, including a service ace from Allgood. Allgood gave the Flames a fast start as she served for four-consecutive points to lead off the set, before she fittingly finished off the same set with a solo block to earn a 25-18 victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.
The final set left fans on the edge of their seats as the UIC team fell behind to Green Bay 10-16 at one point in the match before a kill from Safranek spurred a five-point run to gain a 21-19 lead. From there, the Flames found set and match point five times, before Safranek knocked down back-to-back kills to conclude the set and match in a 33-31 outcome.
The Flames return to action Saturday in a match with cross-city rival, Loyola, at 4:00 p.m. (CT) inside the Flames Athletic Center in Chicago, Ill.
