VALPARAISO, Ind. - The UIC men's soccer team battled first-place Valparaiso to a scoreless tie for nearly 100 minutes, but the Crusaders' Jonathon Smith scored on a direct free kick late in the first overtime period, helping Valpo remain unbeaten in Horizon League play with a 1-0 win over the Flames at Brown Field Saturday night.

The Flames move to 8-5-3 on the season, with a 2-3-1 mark in Horizon League play. Valpo improved to 9-5-3 and 5-0-1.

"Valparaiso is as advertised," said head coach Sean Phillips. "They are very difficult to break down defensively, create chances and are very dangerous on set pieces. We were never able to get the movement going that we had on Wednesday this evening."

The Crusaders held a 13-6 advantage in the shots department, but four-of UIC's six shots were on goal, as Valpo goalkeeper Kyle Zobeck was forced to make four saves. Senior forward Eric Frazier attempted a team-high three shots, while Valpo's Todd Vervynckt took a team-high three shots.

UIC goalkeeper Piotr Kikolski played all 99 minutes (98:28), making four saves - two of those shots were turned away during the overtime session.

The Flames will travel to Rogers Park to take on cross-town rival Loyola next Wednesday (Nov. 2) at Loyola Soccer Park beginning at 7 p.m. CST.
