Swimming & Diving Splits Two At Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. - The UIC men's and women's swimming & diving teams split its double-dual meet against Northwestern and North Dakota on Saturday at the Norris Aquatics Center. The men's team dropped to Northwestern 157-130 and defeated North Dakota 152-146, while the women's team fell 174-114 to the Wildcats and beat the Fighting Sioux 159-140.

"We won a very close meet with North Dakota," head coach Paul Moniak said. "It was encouraging to see our athletes react well in a competitive situation."

The men's squad (3-2, 1-1 Horizon League) was right with Northwestern and North Dakota in several events. Joel Demuth reached a personal best in the 100 free with a time of 47.74, Will Ikeda finished ahead of all swimmers in the 200 breast in 2:08.76 and Daniel Corley took second in the 500 free, finishing in 4:48.10. Gabe Cury took control of the 100 fly, finishing with a personal best in 51.92. The 200 free relay team of Corley, Vince Errichiello, Demuth and Cury took the final first-place of the day with a team best time of 1:25.01.

In the diving competition, Mike Greco took first in the one-meter with a total score of 279.90. In the three-meter, Woody Lord (299.75) and Greco (283.20) placed first and second.

The women's squad (3-3, 1-1 Horizon League) was led in performances by Marissa Yontz, Monica Pinkus, Andrea Longlade, Emily Gniatczyk and Kelsey Millin. Yontz achieved a personal best in the 200 free with a time of 1:55.74. First- and second-place finishes came in the 100 breast, when Pinkus took first in 1:06.24, with Longlade close behind at 1:06.87. Gniatczyk (53.52) and Yontz (53.65) took second and third in the 100 free.

In the 200 breast, Longlade came in first in 2:24.01, a personal and team best. Freshman Millin had the second best time in the 100 fly with 58.38. To finish the day, the 200 free relay team of Gniatczyk, Pinkus, Millin and Yontz put up a collective effort to take the second best time of 1:37.64, a team top time.

The Flames return to action next weekend, when split squads kick off the Phoenix Fall Classic at University of Chicago and the TYR Invitational at Northwestern. Competition begins Nov. 18 and continues through Nov. 20.
