CHICAGO - Shameia Green eclipsed the 30-point plateau for the third time this season to help the UIC women's basketball team snap a two-game slide on Saturday evening as the Flames shot their way past the visiting Milwaukee Panthers, 77-65.
Green scored 30 points to lead all scorers, while teammate Taylor Foulks had 19 points on the strength of five three-pointers to help move UIC (11-12, 6-6 Horizon League) back to the .500 mark in Horizon League play.
Briana Hinkle was also in double figures with 16 points and a team-high eight assists. Jasmine Bailey was not a prominent factor in the scoring column, but she did have a huge impact on the game. The junior corralled 12 rebounds, collected five steals and dished out four assists.
"Jazz [Bailey] was amazing defensively and on the boards," said UIC head coach Lisa Ryckbosch. "Meia [Green] was knocking down shots, Taylor [Foulks] and Bree [Hinkle] got going and when you have that kind of balance, good things happen,"
Milwaukee (9-15, 6-7 Horizon League) would come as close as six points with 4:11 left to play, but an 11-4 closed out the game and sealed the victory for the Flames.
UIC shot 44.6-percent (29-for-65) on the evening, while committing just nine turnovers. The Flames forced 19 miscues by the Panthers.
"Defensively, we were a lot sharper," said Ryckbosch. "That helped us get going offensively and find good shots. We knocked down shots and when that happens, everything starts feeling good."
UIC controlled the pace early on as they busted out to an 11-point lead (19-8) a little more than halfway through the opening half following a lay-up by Jasmine Bailey with 9:07 to play. The Panthers clawed their back however, on the strength of five three-pointers from Anne Breland, four of which came in the final 6:17 of the half. The Flames led 35-32 at the half.
Breland led all players with 15 points in the opening 20 minutes, while teammate Lindsay Laur led everyone with eight rebounds for the Panthers. Shameia Green was the lone player in double figures for UIC in the first half with 12 points, while Bailey had seven rebounds and a game-high four steals.
Laur finished with a team-high 20 points and 15 rebounds.
The Flames will embark on a brief two-game road trip beginning Thursday night at Butler. The Bulldogs bested UIC in the first matchup this season at the UIC Pavilion, 66-61, on Jan. 22. Thursday's game will tip off agt 6 p.m. CST from historic Hinkle Fieldhouse. The trip concludes with a game on Saturday morning at 11:05 a.m. at the Athletics-Recreation Center when the Flames face the Valparaiso Crusaders. UIC knocked off the Crusaders, 63-42, on Jan. 20 at home.
