PEORIA, Ill. - The UIC volleyball team concluded its weekend play at the CEFCU Classic Saturday and defeated host, Bradley, 3-0 (20-25, 25-27, 22-25) at the Renaissance Coliseum in Peoria, Ill., to begin the season with a 2-0 record.
Katie Schumacher-Cawley's team led the match in kills as the squad hammered down 48 to Bradley's 39. Junior Kelsey Safranek (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) knocked down a match-high 19 kills, while chipping in seven digs. Redshirt junior co-captain, Janise Dismuke (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) added 14 kills for the Flames at a clip of .500.
Sophomore co-captain MaryKate Imrie (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) picked up another double-double on the weekend as she claimed 12 digs and 38 assists.
"I thought we played better defense today," Schumacher-Cawley said. "Our passing allowed MaryKate to move the ball around and have some different options. We will get back to work to prepare for our match against Western Illinois Tuesday."
Redshirt junior Nicole Allgood (Crestwood, Ky./South Oldham) knocked down seven kills, claimed 10 digs, while picking up three blocks in the match.
In the first set, UIC and Bradley exchanged points and reached a 10-10 score, before freshman Sara Sternard (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Westmont) delivered an ace to take the lead. The Flames remained in control of the board and handled the Braves in a 25-20 decision in the first set.
The second set was a nail biter as UIC and Bradley remained back and forth through the entire match. The score was tied at 25, before Bradley committed a crucial error. The Flames took advantage of the opportunity and concluded the set with Imrie setting Safranek up for a kill and a 2-0 lead in the match.
UIC entered the third set with a hefty lead as the Flames went on an 8-3 run, including three consecutive kills. Allgood claimed the final point of the set and match in a kill from Imrie to complete the sweep of the Braves.
