Jan. 31, 2012

CHICAGO - Sophomore women's track & field specialist Mariya Denisenko has been named the UICFlames.com Scholar Athlete of the Week for the period ending Jan. 29. Denisenko, who maintains a flawless 4.0 grade-point-average, set a school-record in the long jump at last Friday's Carthage College "Tadd Metzger Invitational" in Kenosha, Wis.

Simonetti, a sophomore Kinesiology major, leaped finishing with a leap of 5.69 meters at the Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center. The women's squad totaled 102.75 points, good for third-place in the field. Between the men's and women's teams, UIC recorded a combined 11 first-place finishes

The Scholar-Athlete of the Week Award is the newest addition to the recently re-designed UICFlames.com platform. Nominees must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA to be considered for the honor.
