CLEVELAND - Cleveland State jumped out to an early double-digit lead, and the Flames shot just 30.4 percent from the field, as the Vikings posted a 73-56 win over the UIC men's basketball team in a Horizon League game at the Wolstein Center Thursday night.

With the setback, UIC drops to 5-10 (1-4 Horizon) on the season. Cleveland State improves to 13-3 and 3-1.

UIC was held without a double-digit scorer for the second time this season. Sophomore forward Hayden Humes scored a team-high eight points to lead the Flames' scoring output. Cleveland State placed four players in double figures, led by Jeremy Montgomery's 14 points, which was fueled by four three-pointers.

Cleveland State shot 45.9 percent from the field, including a 50 percent effort in the first half. UIC held a 40-37 advantage on the boards, and scored 20 more points (38) in the second half, than they did in the opening stanza (18).

CSU led 35-18 at halftime, thanks in large part to a 16-2 run to open the contest. After falling behind 29-10, the Flames pulled within 15 points (29-14) after four-straight points by Humes, but could draw no closer down the stretch of the frame. The Vikings' Charlie Lee scored 10 points in the opening half to lead a balanced scoring attack.

UIC forced Cleveland State into a timeout with 18:23 remaining after pulling within 35-20, but the Vikings responded with a 9-5 spree, and claimed a 44-25 lead at the 15:26 mark. CSU built its largest lead of 27 points (62-35) with 5:16 remaining, before UIC mounted its final run to trim the deficit to 69-54 with 1:12 left.

UIC will complete its northeast Ohio road swing Saturday, when the Flames take on Youngstown State from the Beeghly Center beginning at 6:05 p.m. CST (7:05 p.m. EST). The Penguins outlasted visiting Loyola, 68-64, in overtime Thursday.
