CHICAGO - The UIC baseball and softball seasons are officially underway, and with prognostications pointing toward both teams contending for the Horizon League Championship, fans will be able to track the Flames' success over the power of the airwaves.
The UIC Athletic Department announced Wednesday that 29 regular season baseball and softball home games will air live as audio broadcasts, exclusively on UICFlames.com.
The Flames' softball team opened the 2012 season last weekend, posting wins over Santa Clara and St. Mary's at the Hotel Encanto Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M. Meanwhile, the baseball team will open the campaign with a three-game set at No. 5 Texas A&M this weekend (Feb. 17-19).
The softball team was picked to repeat as Horizon League Champions, while the baseball squad was slotted second in the preseason poll, behind only first-place Wright State -- the Flames and Raiders shared the regular season Horizon League title last spring. UIC's baseball team has won 10-of the last 12 regular season conference championships.
The UIC softball team will have 13 contests broadcast live on UICFlames.com, while the baseball team will have 16 of its home games air live. For the second-consecutive year, Justin Weiner will return to handle the announcing duties for both the baseball and softball broadcasts. Weiner serves as the "Voice of the Flames" for the UIC volleyball and women's basketball telecasts on the Horizon League Network.
UIC will also host the 2012 Horizon League Baseball Tournament at Les Miller Field - all of the postseason games will air live on the Horizon League Network. The regular season champion will host the League's softball tournament, and those contests will also be available with live video and audio on the HLN.
