INDIANAPOLIS - The UIC women's basketball team had its three-game winning streak snapped in a 51-48 loss to Butler on Saturday night inside historic Hinkle Fieldhouse. Senior Shamiea Green led all scorers with 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting, while BU's sophomore center Sarah Hamm netted 18. With the setback, the Flames drop to 16-10 overall and 9-6 in the Horizon League.
"It's tough to win any game when you shoot 29 percent," said head coach Regina Miller. "We missed shots that normally go in for us especially down the stretch. I feel like we just beat ourselves tonight."
UIC went 15-of-52 (28.8%) from the floor and committed 25 turnovers and yet came within one point of the Bulldogs with 15 seconds left in the game on a Emily Kobel three, making the score 49-48. Junior Taylor Foulks immediately fouled BU's Devin Brierly on the inbound and the senior sank both free throws on the opposite end.
After a Bulldog timeout with 12 seconds remaining, senior Kiara Strickland began dribbling the ball up the court and attempted a thread-the-needle pass Jasmine Bailey. Strickland's pass was picked off by Butler's Hannah Douglas and she proceeded to run out the clock.
Green was the lone bright spot for the Flames as she lit up the scoreboard with 14 of her team's 23 first-half points. Bailey, the league's second-leading scorer, was held to seven points on 2-of-6 shooting and had to sit the last nine and half minutes of the first period with three fouls.
During a nearly seven minute scoring drought for Butler in the first half, the Flames reached their largest lead of the game, 20-15, but let it slip away as the Bulldogs went on a 10-3 run to end the half, leading UIC 25-23.
The second half belonged to Hamm and Brierly as they combined for 18 of their squads 26 points. Butler outscored the Flames 14-4 in the paint during the second half and forced 14 turnovers.
Missed free throws by the Bulldogs down the stretch kept UIC in striking distance, but timely miscues and empty possessions sealed the three-point defeat.
The Flames take a week off before playing travel partner Loyola on Saturday, Feb. 25, at the UIC Pavilion with tip time set for 4 p.m. CT.
