KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The UIC women's gymnastics team (4-4) fell to undefeated Western Michigan, 193.825-193.425 Sunday inside the University Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich.
"We had a solid meet, especially with it being our second meet of the weekend," co-head coach Peter Jansson said. "We started off very well, but not as well as we had hoped on the vault, which placed us one point behind Western Michigan at the halfway point. After the floor routine, we had the lead moving onto the beam, where had fantastic routines, but did count one fall. Western Michigan has a very good team, the leader in the MAC, and I thought we matched up very well with them."
Returning to the all-around position was senior Rachel Montoya (South Chicago Heights, Ill./Gymnastics Center), who posted a 38.750.
"We were pleased to have Rachel back in the all-around position," Jansson said. "She did a nice job tonight, along with other fantastic routines."
Junior Chantel Turk (Hazelcrest, Ill./Gym Kinetics) led the Flames in each of the three events she competed. She posted a 9.675 to tie Montoya's score on vault, while scoring a 9.800 on the floor routine to tie senior Andrea Skala (Brookfield, Ill./Flying High Sports) and claiming the crown on bars with a 9.825.
The Flames return to action Saturday against Seattle Pacific at 7:00 p.m. (CT) inside the Physical Education Building in Chicago, Ill.
